Incentive for schools to visit Waitangi
The Waitangi National Trust has teamed up with Westpac in an initiative aimed at having every child visit Waitangi before they leave school.
About 3000 school children or just over 2.5 percent of the country’s students make the trek north each year.
Trust chief executive Greg McManus says the project is about inspiring and educating the next generation of New Zealanders to know and understand the history of the birthplace of New Zealand, as well as promoting the 175th anniversary of the treaty in 2015.
One of the first projects in the Our Nation’s Children initiative is a school movie competition for intermediate school age students during the first term of 2014.
The three best movies will each win a class trip valued at around $10,000 to visit Waitangi and the Bay of Islands.
The initiative was launched today at Westpac’s headquarters by Governor General Sir Jerry Mataparae.
