Back to the future with insurance plan
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says Labour has stolen his idea for a state owned insurance company … but he's happy to let them run with it.
Mr Peters launched his KiwiSure plan in the middle of last month, two weeks before Labour leader David Cunliffe unveiled his KIwi Assure idea.
He says a state insurance company worked well for the country in the half century before the third Labour Government sold it off.
"Of course it's a good idea and the more you hear these foreign insurance companies squealing and carrying on the more you know it's a good idea. The more you hear the National Party squealing about it the more you know it's a good idea. But people like Holyoake, Muldoon, Peter Fraser of the Labour Party all subscribed to an idea of a state insurance company as a competitor to take us out of the clutches of high foreign insurance premiums. and they were right then and they are right now," Mr Peters says.
