Whakaue promoting careers in manaaki

Rotorua has long been a centre of the tourism and hospitality industry, and now the local iwi is teaming up with the operator of the sulphur city’s largest hotel to create career opportunities for its rangatahi.
Ngati Whakaue Education Endowment Trust and Sudima Lake Rotorua say their new scholarship programme is aimed at getting young Ngati Whakaue descendants into employment, leadership and training positions.
Up to two scholarships a year will be granted, with the trust paying course fees with an accredited Industry Training Organisation or education provider, and Sudima providing a guaranteed initial one year’s employment
Trust chair Malcolm Short says it’s a rare opportunity for young Maori to work and train in their hometown in a vocation where they can travel and work all over the world.
Sudima also owns hotels near Christchurch and Auckland airports, Hamilton and Brisbane.
