Rika big winner in Waiata awards


Maisey Rika was the big winner at this year’s Waiata Maori Music Awards at the Hawke's Bay Opera House over the weekend.
The singer-songwriter took home four tohu including the songwriter and female soloist categories, the best Maori traditional album for Whitiora, and the best song with Tangaroa Whakamautai.
The video of Tangaroa Whakamautai won director Shae Sterling the best music video award.
Hustle Hour presenter Pieter T was judged the best male solo artist, and his Completion won the urban rap/hiphop/ RnB album category.
Toni Huata's fourth album Hokopuia, the result of what she calls her musical makeover in the hands of dub and electronica specialist Paddy Free and percussionist Gareth Farr, was rated best pop album.
Kirsten Te Rito won the Radio Airplay in Te Reo Maori Award for Oranga, and Stan Walker’s Take It Easy wone the overall radio airplay award.
The best urban roots album was Heartbeat by Te Awanui Reeder, the former Nesian Mystik lead singer.
