Iwi ski champs delayed

Ruapehu iwi Ngati Rangi has delayed the inaugural Aotearoa Iwi Snow Championships to give iwi more time to organise teams.
Coordinator Chaana Morgan says it was supposed to run last weekend, but only three teams from Ngati Rangi and one from Te Atihaunui a Paparangi had registered.
It will now run from October 14 to 16, and include new categories for primary and secondary school-aged teams, and a free style fun event.
She says the iwi is trying to encourage interest among Maori in snow sports.
"We have a Kahui Maunga snow academy where we take 36 tamariki up there every week. We had one of our local boys come home, Leroy Christiansen, and he is doing a lot with some of the kura and some of the kids we have who want to specialise in snowboarding, and he does video tech with them and all that sort of stuff, photos and tutoring," Ms Chaana Morgan says
She sees many Maori on the ski slopes, but they may not be connected to their iwi so people are welcome to register with the office on 06 3859500 as individuals, and Ngati Rangi will put them into appropriate teams.
