Karikari case heads to Supreme Court
Te Runanga a Iwi o Ngati Kahu has asked the Supreme Court for leave to appeal a resource consent at Doubtless Bay.
The runanga is trying to stop US investment banker Paul Kelly’s company Carrington Estates from building houses behind the dunes at Karikari Beach.
The Court of Appeal has ruled that consents were properly granted by Far North District Council, overturning a High Court finding that the iwi was not properly consulted.
Ngati Kahu claims the project threatens an ancient urupa.
Runanga chair Margaret Mutu has said it’s a case of national importance, and the law firm is not charging the iwi for the work it is doing.
