Politicians testy on data interpretation
The Education Ministry has launched a new website giving a region by region view of how the pre-school and school system are performing.
Minister Hekia Parata says the patterns the data show make it clear where resources need to go.
She says while the overall picture is that the system serves most students well, Maori and Pasifika achievement is lower at all levels of education.
She says the latest report on National Standards shows more teachers are using the data to make judgements about students’ learning.
But the Greens say the Government’s report card on education shows it is failing to address the needs of underachieving children while diverting precious resources away from programmes and teachers who could make a real difference.
Spokesperson Catherine Delahunty says the data shows only 92 percent of Maori children attend early childhood education compared with 98 percent of Pakeha.
She says the Ministry of Education has told the Government that is because there aren’t appropriate services available where they live, and the Government isn’t building them.
