Black to set up education research centre
Ngāi Tūhoe scholar Taiarahia Black says a new position at Te Wānanga ō Awanuiarangi will allow him to bring together a lifetime of networking not just in Aotearoa but with indigenous academics worldwide.
Professor Black has spent 30 years building up Massey University’s Māori studies department.
At Whakatane he intends to establish a research centre focused on Māori education.
He is also working on sharing Māori models for higher education with other indigenous studies programmes around the world, which he says is part of a constant exchange of views and knowledge.
"When I had my interview for this position, academics in the University of Northern British Columbia were able to cut in by Skype and add to the intellectual capacity of whānaungatanga. It was truly amazing and the panel themselves was looking there and looking at these people commenting on the indigenous exchange of knowledge," Professor Black says.
