Injuries hitting Māori harder
The Accident Compensation Corporation says a new study it has conducted with the Ministry of Health will help it develop future injury prevention programmes.
According to the Injury-related Health Loss report shows Māori experience twice the rate of injury-related health loss of non-Māori.
They have particularly higher loss from transport-related, self-inflicted and interpersonal-violence-related injuries.
Injury is the fifth highest cause of health loss, with the top three being cancer and vascular and mental disorders.
John Beaglehole, ACC’s general manager of insurance and prevention services, says the report, which is part of the wider study into the Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk, is a significant step towards understanding the impact that injuries have on the lives of New Zealanders.
