Te Aute on the up
The commissioner for Te Aute College says the current small roll at the historic Māori boys boarding school is working to its advantage, because it means each boy can be on a programme suited to his needs.
The school is starting to turn around the financial and educational problems that led to Elizabeth Ellis being appointed commissioner in early 2011.
Ms Ellis says it is enrolling for 2014, and parents should consider sending their boys to the central Hawkes Bay.
"This school, Te Aute College, really does produce by the end of one year even a student who is strongly Māori, who knows how to conduct himself in protocols, who knows haka and waiata, who knows about rugby, and who has academic goals that are aspired to and met and it's a really good place to be," she says.
Ms Ellis says the appointment of William Colenso High School deputy principal Shane Hiha as Te Aute’s new principal is an important step in its recovery.
