Ngāti Rangitihi spreads its wings
The new Chief Executive of Ngāti Rangitihi’s post settlement trust says the iwi has a larger presence in the Bay of Plenty than many people realise.
Anthony Olsen comes to Te Mana ō Ngāti Rangitihi Trust with a background in environmental management, property and economic development.
The trust is going through the process of getting the mandate to negotiate the iwi’s claims.
Mr Olsen says once it's through the process it can get on with the business of looking after the tribe’s interests in the region.
"There is a perception that Ngāti Rangitihi as an iwi were centred at Mount Tarawera and while they do have a very strong connection to Mount Tarawera and Lake Tarawera, they were spread far and wide so their area of influence extended through to Matata, down to the Waikato River and over to Te Arawa so it’s getting past that perception there were really localised," he says.
