Crossing of Mangatāwhiri marked
Waikato-Tainui people are this marking the 150th anniversary of British troops crossing the Mangatāwhiri Stream and launching war on them.
A service was held this morning (starting 7am) at the aukati, the line King Tawhiao said that British troops should not cross.
Tom Roa, the chair of Waikato-Tainui's Te Arataura tribal executive, says marking the event was not about ongoing grievance but about being informed about history and moving on.
There is also a breakfast event at Hamilton’s SkyCity casino called 'A Day to Remember'.
Former Hamilton mayor Margaret Evans says it will give people a chance to think about the events of those times and some of the people who helped grow the city.
