Koru theme for Matariki stamps

New Zealand Post has chosen the koru as the theme for its special Matariki stamp and coin issue.
Its head of community engagement, Nicola Airey, says the symbol of the unfolding silver fern frond sits nicely with the idea of the Maori new year as a time of new beginnings.
The cluster of stars, also known as the Pleiades, returned to the southern skies this week.
The stamps come as a miniature sheet of six stamps in a set, while the coin is a one ounce silver coin.
New Zealand Post is also sponsoring the Manu Aute Kite Day at Orakei Maraei on July 20, and the Kaumatua Kapa Haka at Te Papa in Wellington on the last weekend of the month.
