Ihumatao tales shared
Tales from the oldest continuous Māori settlement in Aotearoa will be shared tonight at the Mangere Arts Centre Ngā Tohu ō Uenuku.
To mark the photographic exhibition Ihumatao ‘Taku Tangata, Taku Whenua’, artist Qiane Matata-Sipu is bringing some of her relatives into the gallery to talk about life in the village tucked between Auckland International Airport and the Manukau Harbour.
She says they will span a number of generations, all with stories to tell about growing up in a pa where a traditional village lifestyle has persisted on the edge of a city, and where basic services like electricity and sewerage came behind the rest of Auckland.
The event, which starts at 6.30 this evening, will also feature Mayor Len Brown.
