Māori Trust Office gets makeover
There’s a new name and a new kaupapa for the Māori Trust Office.
Māori Trustee Jamie Tuuta says in future the organization will be known as Te Tumu Paeroa, and it will have the vision of mobilising Māori land and assets to create this generation’s legacy.
Since getting the job 18 months ago, Mr Tuuta has undertaken an extensive review of the office, which was made independent four years ago after being part of the Maori Affairs Department for most of last century.
Te Tumu Paeroa manages 100,000 hectares of Māori owned land held in 2000 different trusts, companies and joint ventures on behalf of more than 95,000 landowners.
Mr Tuuta says only 20 percent of the 1.5 million hectares of Māori-owned land is well developed, and he’s keen to work with landowners to unlock its potential.
He will be traveling the country over the next few weeks to talk to owners directly about what Te Tumu Paeroa is doing and how it will be working with them.
