Bay of Islands hikoi to start hearings
The Waitangi Tribunal resumes its hearing of northern Māori treaty claims today by visiting sites in the Bay of Islands.
The tour on the Fullers boat Dolphin Seeker will look at places that feature in the histories of Karetu-based Ngāti Manu, Te Kapotai at Waikare and Ngāti Kuta/Patu Keha on the Te Rawhiti Peninsula.
Pita Tipene, the Chair of Ngā Hapū ō te Takutai Moana, says attacks on the hapū by the British in retaliation for Hone Heke’s sacking of Kororareka in 1845 were war crimes.
The hearings will be held the rest of the week in the Waitangi Copthorne Hotel.
