Manukau shine in waka nationals
Switching harbours proved no barrier for the Manukau Outrigger Canoe Club in the weekend’s National Long Distance Waka Ama Championships, racing in challenging squally conditions on Waitemata Harbour.
Manukau took away the Club points trophy and the Open Men’s race.
The open women’s division was shared by EIT Kaiarahi Toa from Horouta and Manuz and Gemimas from Haeata Ocean Sports. Waka Ama New Zealand Chief Executive Lara Collins says the turnout of 240 crews from 42 clubs was a record, matched by the large number of supporters and spectators lining the Royal Akarana Yacht Club jetty.
She says long distance racing is a true test of grit, strength and endurance for kai hoe.
