Eels shifted to new home
Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa is concerned at the welfare of eels living in Masterton’s sewage ponds.
The iwi’s environment manager, Ra Smith, has urged the Masterton District Council to have contingency plans in case there are problems transferring the estimated 85,000 eels from old to new ponds at the Homebush facility, which has just been ungraded.
Councillors have agreed to install an eel ladder and connecting pipes between the ponds, with a fallback option of trapping and transferring the tuna if the new ponds prove an unsuitable environment.
