Māori disabled given hearing
CCS Disability Action wants to hear how it can better meet the needs of disabled Māori.
Its northern region is holding consultation hui this week at the Manukau Institute of Technology’s Ngā Kete Wānanga Mārae in Otara.
Organiser Recenia Kaka says Māori voices are often marginalised, so they are not heard by disability support providers.
She says providers like CCS need to build up trust.
“We may not be a popular option because for mainstream and Māori are an important part of New Zealand. We need to find out how we can work together and start having kōrero about the pathways that we need to be looking at so it can be available,” she says.
Recenia Kaka says CCS Disability Action has been building up a diverse workforce so it has more Māori staff and people from other ethnic groups to match the people it is supporting.
