Jobs top priority for Ngapuhi
Ngapuhi Chair Sonny Tau says unemployment is now at a crisis level in his rohe.
Almost one in three Ngapuhi and Māori youth in the North are without jobs.
Mr Tau, who also chairs Te Rōpū ō Tuhoronuku, which is seeking the mandate to negotiate a settlement of historical claims in the region, says a new survey by Horizon Research shows jobs, tribal unity and housing are the most important issues facing Ngapuhi.
He says members are counting on the settlement to provide education support and improved health.
Mr Tau says Ngapuhi companies could be expected to provide hundreds more employment opportunities in the North following the settlement.
