Options for Māori in high rise city
Auckland Mayor Len Brown says the city's draft unitary plan includes plenty of options for Māori and Pasifika families.
The plan proposes what Mr Brown calls a quality compact city, with intensification of some areas offset by green space and parks.
It includes more high-rise and small-size apartments and assumes the city needs to eventually cope with another million residents.
Mr Brown says the council needs to provide for all family sizes and living arrangements.
“We know the Pasifika and Māori families have larger families than everyone else. In modern times, alot of those families aren’t large either, you’re talking about 2, 3 or 4 kids. So in a 3 or 4 bedroom apartment, that’s beginning to look increasingly like an option. People of this generation are increasingly prepared to look at options or choices and go more for lifestyle rather than for a garden at the back,’ says Len Brown.
