Fraud devalues share pre-registration propaganda

Greens Co-leader Metiria Turei says the system of pre-registering to buy Mighty River Power shares was made deliberately loose to deliver a propaganda victory for the Government.
Several high profile opponents of the sale were pre-registered, including Ms Turei and Labour Leader David Shearer.
Ms Turei says the system did not include basic identity checks to screen out fraudulent pre-registrations.
“They don't have it set up, I found out from treasury officials, because they want to make it extremely easy for people to register, which includes fraudulent registrations. People can register their cats, dogs, horses and anything they want because there is no security on the system,” she says.
Metiria Turei expects checking of names on the petition seeking a referendum against further asset sales will take about two months, and then the question will be when the Government decides to run the referendum.
