118th anniversary of Tainui regatta

The Waikato River is running low, but that won’t stop seven waka taua parading in front of Tūrangawaewae Mārae tomorrow for the 118th annual regatta.
Spokesperson Moko Templeton says organisers asked Mighty River Power if it could let extra water into the awa for the show, but they understand its refusal given the continuing drought.
The waka will include the 72-year-old Tumanako and Rangatahi and Taheretikitiki II, which is a mere 41 years old, as well as Te Āniwaniwa from Waiwhetu Mārae in Lower Hutt.
Today’s activities include the heats of primary and secondary school kōpapa or dugout canoe racing and waka ama racing.
There will also be performances from the region’s kapa haka, including two Te Matatini finalists, and live bands.
