Small consolation in port dredging loss
A Tauranga Moana kaumatua says the fight over dredging of Tauranga Harbour was worth it because of the conditions the iwi were able to win.
Conservation Minister Nick Smith has approved the port company’s expansion plans now the legal fight is over.
Hauata Palmer says it has been a long fight, and the iwi was able to modify some aspects of the scheme.
“I know that one part of them involved blowing up one of the rocks at the base of Mauao and that was an absolute no no for us. Those are the sorts of conditions that are attached to these types of consents. Another was to set up a fund for the redistribution of mātaitai,” says Hauata Palmer.
