Hone Carter calls seats apartheid
Far North Mayoral candidate John Carter is attacking a plan to include three Māori seats on a proposed unitary council.
The Local Government Commission is considering the plan put up by current Far North Mayor Wayne Brown to merge regional and district councils in the region.
Mr Carter says the Māori seats aspect was apartheid and would cause division.
The former MP says people in the region had always been able to work together, and in the past Maori have been elected to represent the whole community.
He says with 11 iwi in the region, having only three Māori seats could cause disunity among Māori.
