Te Matatini, a whānau affair
The 41 teams competing in this year’s Te Matatini will be welcomed to the Rotorua International Stadium this morning.
Organisers are expecting up to 60,000 people to come through the stadium over the next four days.
Te Matatini Chair Selwyn Parata says kapa haka is a way of life for those involved.
“You know while there are 40 people in a kapahaka that eventually compete, maybe 200 hundred others that are involved with all those 40. It’s your whole family, your children, your parents, your grandparents and your cousins. Some perform with you, other’s cook kai; other’s make costumes and other’s look after children in your family”. says Selwyn Parata.
