Commitment Needed To Create Jobs
Māori Party MP Te Ururoa Flavell would like to see Māori organisations try harder to employ their own people.
Mr Flavell says there are many efforts under way to raise Māori economic performance and to train young people for a wider range of careers.
But he says many organisations aren’t thinking about how they can recruit and train rangatahi.
“In my area for example, there’s farms, there’s land trusts and there’s incorporations that do farming. I don’t know whether we manage that well nor do we adjust the schooling system. Places like Te Aute for example, are prime models which might allow us to take those who are really interested in the rural farm life because they have a farm there. It really starts to develop in their desire to move to farms at a very young age. It’s so they can take up the management roles and not just be the shepherds”. says Waiariki MP Te Ururoa Flavell.
