Party sidesteps Flavell challenge
The Māori Party has consigned Te Ururoa Flavell’s leadership bid into constitutional limbo.
The attempted coup, which appeared to have the backing of co-leader Tariana Turia, overshadowed the party’s welcome on to Ratana Pā yesterday.
After the powhiri, the National Council moved down to nearby Whangaehu marae to discuss whether the challenge met the rules.
Party President Pem Bird says there were robust discussions around constitution and process, but the hui confirmed there will be no immediate change in leadership.
Mrs Turia has announced she wishes to step aside as co-leader to allow the party to rejuvenate, and she has urged Dr Sharples to do the same.
She dismissed a suggestion from Mana leader Hone Harawira that the parties merge with him at the head, saying that was a comedy show.
