Lake Plan irks Manukau iwi

South Auckland iwi Ngāti Tamaoho has vetoed a bid to turn part of the Manukau Harbour into an artificial lake.
The Pāhurehure Inlet Protection Society wants to put tidal gates under the Southern Motorway so water could be trapped in the inlet, creating a temporary lake to be used for sailing, kayaking and waka ama events.
The Environment Court blocked the idea when Papakura District Council tried to do it in 2004.
The society says it can now be done at much lower cost, but Ngāti Tamaoho Trust chair Dennis Kirkwood says stopping the tide’s natural flow could cause sediment and pollution to build up.
It would create an ''unnatural environment'' for the fish, crabs and wading birds that live in the harbour.
