Personality politics in way of tribal governance
The chair of Waikato Tainui's executive, Tom Roa, says personality politics have got in the way of good tribal governance for too long.
Last weekend's meeting of the tribal parliament deferred a decision on who should replace the chair Tania Martin, who was ousted in November.
Former executive chair Tukoroirangi Morgan is seeking the post with the backing of King Tuheitia, but other challengers are expected to emerge before February.
Mr Roa says there was a mood in Te Kauhanganui to set aside some of the disputes that have got out of hand in recent years.
“There have always been disputes and I unlikely this to a family who have certain members of the family want to conduct the families affairs in a certain way, another group wanting to conducting in another certain way believing that this way is the best for the family. Unfortunately sometimes our personality and I included myself in this have intruded”.
Tom Roa says concern about the continued fighting has created pressure to change the rules, which have in the past led to the regular court action.
