Horomia keen to see TPK resume regional role
Former Māori Affairs Minister Parekura Horomia would like the see the new chief executive of Te Puni Kokiri beef up the ministry’s capacity on the ground.
Michelle Hippolite told Radio Waatea yesterday that decisions are still to be made on who the ministry’s operational and policy roles will be weighted.
Whānau Ora Minister Tariana Turia also backs having more regional staff to help with her initiative, including people who can act as brokers to help iwi find their people jobs, houses and other services.
Mr Horomia says the ministry may be losing sight of where Māori are.
“It is about strengthening our regions, because at the end of the day the lot of the pressure that is on our people is out in the regions and I really wandered about this policy drift and peoples view that everything is based in Wellington”.
Parekura Horomia says Michelle Hippolite is a capable and experienced manager who is taking over a good team.
