The Ministry of Justice is threatening to take the farm of the former Haast helicopter pilot convicted of stealing pounamu unless he pays $300,000 in reparation to Ngāi Tahu.
David Saxton and his son Morgan, who later died in a helicopter crash, were convicted of stealing the pounamu in 2008.
Bryre Patchell from the Ministry of Justice says the Courts and Criminal Matters Act, which came into force earlier this year, allows forced asset sales to recoup court imposed fines and reparations.
