It was a lucky escape for a whanau at Waahi Pa this morning when an early morning fire destroyed their home.
Marae member Potaka Maipi says the three people in the house, members of the Haunui whanau, were able to get out through a rear door after they were forced back by flames from the main door.
He says the house was beside the marae carpark, and there was concern the fire could spread to the marae or the rest of the papakainga.
