Takataapui invite whanau to silver jubilee

Organisers of this year’s silver jubilee Hui Takatapui want to use it to reflect how far Maoridom has come in the past 25 years to recognise gay, lesbian and transgender members of whanau.
Jordon Harris from the AIDS Foundation says the first hui in 1986 was sparked by the growing HIV epidemic, and developed strategies to educate Maori at risk and their wider whanau about HIV and AIDs.
He says today it’s about creating a wider identity for Maori gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.
That includes creating positive social environments so young takatapui who are confident about their sexuality, genders and sexual behaviours.
Local hapu and whanau have been invited to attend the hui at Waipuna Marae in Pangaru in November, and participants will be encouraged to bring whanau members with them.
