Kahungunu buy in to anti-smoking message
Maori anti-tobacco group Te Ao Hurihuri is crediting an iwi-based programme for a big jump in the number of people in the Hawkes Bay seeking to kick the habit.
Director Shane Bradbrook says by making all marae-based events smoke-free, Ngati Kahungunu has given a clear signal to its people.
He says because of the tikanga people have to leave their tobacco off the premises, and that is coupled with having support for people who need it.
So far this year more than 1500 people in the region have registered with Quitline, and Maori health providers Te Kupenga Hauora and Te Taiwhenua O Heretaunga have been helping people give up.
