Thirteen years after local hapu asked for the changes, Turangi’s community board has approved a slate of new names for the town’s streets.
Tuwharetoa want 14 of the town’s 84 street names and three reserve names changed to either new Maori names or to the correct Maori spelling.
So Herekiekie St becomes Te Herekiekie St, and Tautahanga Rd will be renamed Te Rangitautahanga Rd.
Turangitukua Maori Committee chair Jeffrey Bennett says the main reason for proposing the name change was to correct the spelling of their tupuna.
The changes will be put to the Taupo District Council for approval at its meeting next month.
