Labour MP and longtime South Auckland resident Willie Jackson is calling for cool heads in the wake of an armed attack on a jewellery shop owner.
The Papatoetoe man fought off his young attackers with a sword after being hit in the head with a hammer.
Mr Jackson says it’s craziness – and the Government shouldn’t respond with more craziness.
“They can’t just go ‘we’ve got boot camps, we’ll tke the patches off them. These kids don’t have patches. These kids are the result of what’s been happening sadly in society. It makes me angry too but we need cool heads now, we can’t just think we will go out and arrest 10 and 11 year olds, come in with no warrants and this sort of stuff. It just requires cool heads,” he says.
Mr Jackson says the Labour Government was on the right track with an increased focus on early intervention and rehabiliation.
