It’s Māori speech time again, with Aorere College today hosting Ngā Manu Kōrero competition for schools in Tāmaki Makaurau ki Manukau.
The best English and Māori senior and junior category winners will head to the national competition in September at Spark Arena.
MC Lewin Husband says the growth of te reo Māori in secondary education can be seen in the diversity of schools entering.
“We’ve got the likes of Ormiston, Epsom Girls Grammar, Auckland Boys Grammar, Ōtāhuhu College, Aorere College, who are our host, James Cook High, Alfriston College, Te Kura Kaupapa ā rohe ō Māngere, Pakuranga College and Diocesan School for Girls. So there’s a range of Kura aunua or kura auraki mainstream schools, our kura ā iwi such as Ngā Tapuwae and our kura kaupapa Māori also have presence too,” he says.
The competition for Tāmaki Makaurau ki Te Waitematā is next Thursday at Westlake Girls’ High School.
