Northland mayors given wake up call from iwi

Tai Tokerau iwi leaders have told Northland’s mayors they need to work better among themselves and with Māori to deal with the challenges facing them.
Te Kahu o„ Taonui chair Harry Burkhardt says there has been an uneven response from the Far North, Whangarei and Northland Regional councils to issues such as Maori wards, significant natural areas and the Three Waters reforms, leading to increased anxiety in the community.
A hui in Kaikohe last week between the mayors and iwi noted reforms led by central government will change the local government landscape in Te Tai Tokerau.
Mr Burthardt says it’s vital mana whenua and local and regional interests have a voice as these developments unfold.
He says it’s time to revive the Whanaungatanga ki Taurangi agreement signed by Te Kahu o Taonui and the Northland Mayoral Forum in January 2019.
