Please explain call on Ōmāpere peril
Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis says he was blindsided by a call from the Ngāpuhi Rūnanga for action on Lake Ōmāpere.
Rūnanga chair Wane Wharerau has issued a report on the continuing dire health of Northland’s largest freshwater lake.
Mr Davis says usually he’s well aware of issues in his electorate – and while he knows the history of the lake, Mr Wharerau’s concerns only reached him through the media.
“There was a group I believe set up to be kaitiaki but I’m not sure what they’ve done. And yeah, it’s an opportunity for me to get in touch with Wane, and Sam Napia of Te Rūnanga-A-Iwi-o-Ngāpuhi, and have a yarn about that – as well as other issues pertaining to Ngāpuhi,” he says.
