New Broadcasting Minister Willie Jackson goes head to head with the social media giants today to argue for fair payment for New Zealand media content.
He says any attempt to support the broadcasting sector has to consider how social media has undermined the economic viability of traditional outlets.
“There’s no doubt they use news sites to drive the audience towards their set up, so Facebook and Google take the news as it suits them and there is no payment. It’s really affected news all around the country, set-ups being closed because everyone is getting what they want free of the Facebooks and the Googles,” Mr Jackson says.
The Commerce Commission has given the Newspaper Publishers Association permission to collectively negotiate with Facebook owner Meta and with Google over payment for content, although New Zealand Herald owner NZME has broken ranks to reach its own agreement with Meta.
