Shaw sure votes there as Tuiono tests support
Green MP James Shaw is confident he has the votes to take back the party’s co-leadership, despite a possible contest with one of his caucus colleagues.
The role is vacant after he failed to secure the necessary 75 percent support at the party’s annual meeting.
He says the spill came as a surprise to many party members.
“I have had direct conversations but I have also had an enormous amount of correspondence from Green Party members up and down the country including from branches that did not cast a vote on Saturday and that has reassured me I have the support necessary in order to retain the leadership,” Mr Shaw says.
MP Teanau Tuiono yesterday indicated he was not ruling out running for the job, as it was important, particularly to young members, for the Green Party had a strong and independent voice that was not tethered to the Labour Party.
