Kahungunu tono for affordable housing plan
Ngāti Kahungunu is talking to the crown about buying and developing land at Napier for affordable housing.
Chair Ngahiwi Tomoana says the 22 hectare site next to Pukemokimoki Marae in Maraenui has room for 600 homes.
The project also offers opportunities for skills training and jobs.
Aayden Clarke from K3 Kahungunu Property says the tribally owned company intends to work alongside Kāinga Ora, private developers, community housing providers and tangata whenua.
The master plan includes green open spaces, shops and community services as well as the regeneration of native flora and fauna, protection of water quality and other integrated environmental features alongside affordable, accessible housing.
