The latest youth suicide statistics have revealed a sharp jump in rangatahi Maori taking their own lives.
The Chief Coroner, Judge Neil MacLean, says in the past year 80 teenagers between 15 and 19 took their own lives, up from 56 the year before.
Of those, 37 were Maori, well above the average over the previous four years of 21.
There were 547 suicides in the year ended June 30, 2013, the youngest a child aged between five and nine.
Nearly three-quarters of suicides were male and 28 per cent were unemployed.
