Horomia backs Morgan mediation

Labour MP Parekura Horomia is backing the treaty negotiations minister’s use of former Tainui chair Tukuroirangi Morgan to mediate between factions of Northland Treaty claimants.
Mr Morgan has drawn flak in the north for suggesting changes to the structure of Tuhoronuku, the body set up by the Ngapuhi runanga to negotiate the claims, which is facing opposition from the Ngati Hine runanga and other hapu.
Mr Horomia says some criticism is inevitable, but Minister Chris Finlayson is right to bring in a circuit breaker.
"Sometimes it’s better to use an outside person to negotiate because internal politics are such that people don’t move. I have a lot of regard for Tuku’s ability. The issue is to get a deal so all people there can benefit out of it," Mr Horomia says.
