Iwi look to Lincoln for farm training
Two central Waikato iwi hope to be training people to work on the land as early as next year.
Ngāti Haua and Ngāti Koroki-Kahukura have a memorandum of understanding with Lincoln University to work together post-settlement.
Spokesperson Willie Te Aho says the iwi met last week with university staff to work out what courses can be run from the former Maungatautari School and other sites.
The iwi want to train people to help with restoration and management of the Maungatautari ecological island, as well as have courses for those who want to work on or manage farms.
"We have people running farms and it’s taking them to the next level so it’s not only for certificates in environment or farm practices, it’s actually about the commercial agriculture for those that are prepared to take the next step, so we are talking about location, we are talking about numbers, we are talking about equipment and we’ll be finalising that over the next two months," Mr Te Aho says.
