Lack of vision drives gallery veto
The head of the group driving the establishment of a permanent gallery for Maori says the scrapping of the Hundertwasser Art Centre shows a huge lack of vision by the Whangarei District Council.
The council yesterday voted to drop the art centre from its long term plan, even though the $13 million needed for the project had been secure.
Elizabeth Ellis says the trust in Vienna which administers the estate of the late Freidrich Hundertwasser has now withdrawn its offer to loan works for permanent display.
She says it means the Maori gallery which was to occupy the first floor of the centre can’t go ahead.
" It’s about a lack of vision its about a lack of imagination its about people not being able to look forward and see what is going to grow a region and grow a city " she says.
