Ngati Hine kvetch at reading time
The Ngati Hine Runanga says it hasn’t been given enough time to evaluate submissions on the mandate that has been granted to negotiate a settlement for Ngapuhi’s historic treaty claims.
Ngati Hine is trying to break away from the Ngapuhi Runanga and has been in a long-running battle over the formation of the negotiating body, Tuhoronuku.
After the Waitangi Tribunal asked the Crown to provide copies of all public submissions on Tuhoronuku's deed of mandate to claimants opposing the process, Tuhoronuku agreed to extend the election of hapu kaikorero until the end of next week.
Ngati Hine says that means it has only two weeks to assess over 3500 submissions.
It says information from the submissions will help it determine whether or not the Crown properly considered the overwhelming opposition.
The Ngati Hine Runanga wants to get a separate mandate so it can negotiate a separate settlement for the hapu’s claims, which it believes are different to those of other parts of Ngapuhi.
