Whanau Ora safe after election
Whanau Ora safe after election
Labour leader David Cunliffe says Labour would look at Whanau Ora if it forms a government after the September election, but it’s unlikely to throw it away.
The programme to deliver integrated services to families has now moved to its next phase, with urban Maori, iwi and Pasifika groups being selected to form commissioning agencies.
They will set policies and distribute funds, taking over the role from Te Puni Kokiri.
Mr Cunliffe says Labour likes the idea of working in partnership with the whanau, hapu and iwi.
"We strongly support the idea that sometimes government services can be better delivered by Maori for Maori in Maori communities, so we want to build on progress that’s been made with Whanau Ora. I wouldn’t want to say it’s perfect. I don’t think anybody would. So when we come into government we will look at it, take the best bits, build on it. In general the idea of working with and for communities is one that we support," he says.
