Scientists back Maori research gripe
The New Zealand Association of Scientists is backing Maori academics concerned about the exclusion of Maori voices when money for science is handed out.
Nga Pae o Te Maramatanga has failed to make the shortlist to continue as a centre of research excellence or Core.
The association says Nga Pae is the only CoRE that addresses Maori research needs and capability building.
It says a lengthy critique by Dr Leonie Pihama from Waikato University highlights a scandalous situation that the views of Maori were not incorporated in the development of the National Science Challenges, which are a major factor in the funding change.
Association president Nicola Gaston says the scientific community already struggles with diversity, and the fact that Maori researchers have struggled to be included in the National Science Challenges is a disgrace and an embarrassment.
